Joey Wahler
Reporter, MSG

Joey Wahler

Unchartered territory. That best describes Joey Wahler’s beat as reporter for Madison Square Garden. If there’s a compelling human interest sports story or off-beat angle in the tri-state area, Wahler will find it. Contributing to Angles, Wahler’s stories have included: taking viewers inside the Downtown Athletic Club, "Home of the Heisman," for the first time since it closed after damage suffered on 9-11; an exclusive jailhouse interview with ex-Knick and convicted felon Sly Williams; and a New Jersey track star victimized by a man accused of stalking female college athletes nationally.

Among Wahler’s SportsDesk features: a profile of former Raider All-Pro linebacker Phil Villapiano, who motivated a paraplegic to walk again by loaning him his Super Bowl ring; unveiling the basketball side of Steve Schirripa, "Bobby Bacala" from The Sopranos, former captain at Brooklyn College, who worked out with the Knicks for MSG; and a visit with "SI King" Scott Smith, who has nearly every issue ever of Sports Illustrated autographed by whoever graced the cover.

For MSG.com, Wahler writes a "Where Have They Been?" column, tracking down former metropolitan area sports personalities. His subjects have included Tom Seaver, Lou Carnesecca and Mike Bossy. Wahler has worked for MSG since 2000, also filling in anchoring SportsDesk. Since 1998, he's also seen on News 12 New Jersey, where he’s covered the Jets, Nets and Devils. Wahler was a sports and news reporter at News 12 Connecticut, where his stories ranged from U'Conn's 1998 men's basketball national champions, to the mass murder at the state lottery headquarters. Wahler's TV career began at WZBN in Trenton, NJ, doing news and sports. He covered the rape and murder of Megan Kanka, and subsequent evolution of "Megan’s Law," and the capital murder trial of Ambrose Harris.

Wahler’s play-by-play experience includes Rider University basketball. He won MSG’s first-ever College Play-by-Play Competition in 1991, broadcasting a quarter of a Knick game on WFAN radio with analyst Walt Frazier. Wahler attended Seton Hall University, calling basketball and baseball on WSOU-FM, including the Pirate basketball team that reached the NCAA Championship Game in 1989. A Brooklyn native, Wahler attended Madison High School, alma mater of sportscasting legend Marty Glickman, who became one of his mentors.
