Matt Loughlin
MSG.com Columnist / Batt'r Up! host
FOX Sports Net (FSN) viewers have seen Matt Loughlin from a variety of locales. In the fall and winter, Loughlin works as pre- and post-game host for FSN’s New Jersey Devils telecasts, a capacity he has served in since 1990. He can also be seen calling play-by-play on selected Devils telecasts.
In 2006, the versatile Loughlin intergrated his TV experience into cyberspace by hosting "This Week in Hockey" and "Batt'r Up!," two new weekly podcasts for MSG.com. Both programs feature various interview formats by Matt with today's NHL and MLB greats.
From 1996 to 2005, Loughlin also served as the pre- and post-game host of New York Mets telecasts on FSN/MSG, and was part of the Mets production team that was awarded a New York Emmy in the “Outstanding Sports Programming” category for the Mets On Deck pre-game show. Matt also served as co-host for the relaunch of “Kiner’s Korner” on FSN beginning in 1999, alongside the legendary Ralph Kiner. Loughlin also called play-by-play for the “indoor war on the floor” with the New Jersey Red Dogs of the Arena Football League for the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
Beginning his career in 1979, the Seton Hall graduate’s first job in broadcasting was as a news reporter at WCTC-TV in New Brunswick, NJ. In 1980, he served as assistant sports director at Suburban Cablevision of New Jersey and two years later he was promoted to sports director, a position he held until 1994. During Loughlin’s tenure as sports director, the network was the recipient of six national CableACE awards, including three for overall sports coverage and one for a sports special documentary on the history of football in South River (New Jersey), where the local high school has spawned many eventual NFL greats. He also won a CableACE for his play-by-play work on the state basketball championship between Montclair and Camden High Schools in 1985.
In 1989, Loughlin began his association with SportsChannel New York (now FSN) as an announcer/reporter for Hofstra football and lacrosse telecasts. In 1990, he began hosting the New Jersey Nets pre- and post-game shows as well as selected Islanders and Devils pre- and post-game shows. From 1993-95, he served as the trackside reporter on the Emmy-nominated series “Summer Racing” at Yonkers Raceway. In 1995, he called play-by-play for the New Jersey Rockin’ Rollers professional roller hockey team. During the summer of 1995, he worked at 1010 WINS Radio as the sports anchor and updated listeners twice an hour on the latest happenings in the world of sports.
Loughlin, who has been known to fully immerse himself in his features, went all-out during the “Seventies Night at Wrigley Field” promotion in 1996 when he dressed in a John Travolta-like white suit and strutted to Bee Gees music during the pre-game show of the Mets/Cubs telecast.
Loughlin resides in Westfield, NJ, with his wife Maggie and their sons Matthew, Conor and Liam.
