Ross began his broadcast career by calling baseball and basketball games for the Florida State Seminoles while attending the university on a basketball scholarship. After graduating, and a short stint in the Army, he continued his broadcasting career at WHLI Radio in Hempstead, Long Island. Ross went on to become the original voice for the New Jersey Americans (now the New Jersey Nets) and the New York Islanders.
Ross' history with MSG Network dates back to 1973 when he was one of the first Knicks and Rangers radio announcers. That same year, Ross had the opportunity to call play-by-play for the Knicks during their historic drive to the championship. In 1978, Ross added Jets football on WCBS Radio to his resume. From 1985-88, Ross served as the Yankees announcer on WPIX-TV, SportsChannel New York and WABC Radio. From 1985-98, Ross called Jets preseason games on WPIX-TV. In 1988, Ross joined New York's WFAN Radio and began the "Spencer Ross Show." Two years later, Ross returned to the New Jersey Nets to do play-by-play. He served in that capacity until 1995. In 1995-96, Ross headed north to do play-by play for the Boston Celtics for WEEI Radio.
Ross has rounded out his broadcasting resume by working the summer Olympics for ABC Radio in 1984, '92 and '96, and for NBC-TV in 1988. In 1992, Ross called radio play-by-play for the USA "Dream Team."
Ross has been rewarded for his excellence in the broadcasting field on many occasions. While calling Yankees games on SportsChannel New York in 1987, Ross earned his first New York Emmy. He has also been named New York State's best play-by-play man twice while broadcasting for the Jets.
After quitting smoking a decade ago, Ross took a renewed interest in physical fitness. He keeps himself in shape by running six to seven miles a day. He has also completed the New York City Marathon twice and the Boston Marathon three times.
Ross currently lives in Manhattan and is an avid music lover with a particular interest in jazz. He has three sons: Stephan, and twins David and Jonathan.
